Decorating with My Three Year Old

Here is a recent decorating battle at my house:

I put this little picture in the heart frame on top of my scrapbooking shelves.

William came in to my room, moved the picture, and said, "Mommy, it looks better over here."
That night after he went to bed I put it back where I wanted it. It is my room and my stuff, after all.

Two days later William noticed what I did, and he put it back over here, saying, "Mommy, this was in the wrong place. It goes here."
Please note, that this is in my bedroom. My own bedroom!!! I never thought I'd have to battle my three year old with how I decorate my own room!
This little picture has been moved back and forth about 6 or 7 times total now. I insist on the original location because the top of the shelves is lacking pretty touches, but William continues to want the picture on the desk. He even told me, "It matches better here." He's not just being random. He is doing what he thinks looks good!
This has been our long term battle:
I like to put his little bird whistle on this shelf with the bird picture and the bird's nest wreath. It fits the theme, and I like it that way.

William says that it belongs over here on this shelf, and he regularly moves it back here after I have put it away in the "wrong" spot.

My son is one of the most particular three year olds I have ever known! What other little boy would even notice details like that? He cracks me up.

  1. Sounds like you have a future interior decorator on your hands. He'll be famous and have his own reality show: William's Workshop. His catch phrase at the end of every show will be, "Don't let me catch you putting things in the wrong spot!"

Stopping by from SITS - you commented above me today.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  2. Haha! So cute! Sometimes I wish my boys were more particular about things like that! Hope you're feeling good!

  3. I have to agree with William on the heart frame. But I agree with you on the whistle... definitely better next to the bird frame.
Mom made you some super sweet baby blankets today. :)

  4. Funny you should mention that you agree with William on the heart frame! I think it looks good there, too, and I would keep it there if the other spot weren't so bare. But the bareness bothers me more, so I keep moving it. :P

Can't wait to see the baby blankets! Wish you could come to visit next week, too. :(

  5. I look forward to seeing William in the future on HGTV.

  6. Sorry, I agree with William on the heart frame too. It shows up much better on the dark wood.

  7. He is too cute to have such strong thoughts on decorating at his age!
