Window Mistreatments

I was asked about the curtains that are in my bedroom. Those are my window mistreatments. Real window treatments are too expensive and too much work, so I cheat and make fake curtains. :) I borrowed the term "mistreatments" from the Nester, my favorite home decorating blogger. Her home is beautiful, and she mainly uses fabric, glue guns, thrift store finds, and yard sale finds.

I needed to fix those windows somehow. For one thing, there was way too much white on the wall, and that is stressful for me! The wall was just too bare. The bigger problem, though, was all of the sunlight. The sunshine makes it hard for me to sleep in the morning.

Solution: Dark fabric from Wal-Mart on sale for $2 a yard (It was even purple!), ring clips, steam-a-seam, and upholstery tacks.

The project was simple. I didn't have to sew anything. I used the steam-a-seam tape to make a hem at the bottom of the fabric. The sides of the curtains have the selvedge edges. No sewing or steam-a-seam necessary there. I just tuck them behind so that they don't show.

For the top I used ring clips. No hem necessary. The raw edges are hidden.

Then I tacked it onto the wall! I had some tassel ties that I got for free at the thrift store. They don't exactly match, but they were free. Perfect.

This fabric really makes the room dark when I need it to be. I can sleep in again.

Ahh, much better. I like my room now.

  1. What a great idea! They turned out beautifully too!

  2. Stopping by from SITS!! Happy Tuesday!! Your curtains are beautiful.

  3. I have read all of your latest blogs, but I can't remember where I left on in leaving comments! Oops! Anyways, love the curtain details. I saw someone at JoAnn's the other day and she said she totally doesn't sew the curtains she makes either...she had this cool little kit thingie she was buying. I have no idea what it was...but hey, you can do it without a kit! So, I don't think they are MIS treatments at all! :) Love that Will lets you have purple in your room!

  4. that looks GREAT will you come to my house and do it :)

Stopping by from SITS to let you know we are having a big Getaway Giveaway to raise money for our charity. 2 Round Trip Airline Tickets & a Sweet Spot Pink Breast Cancer Putter.

  5. very dramatic. Well done. I had never realized how simple those steam a seam strips are. I will have to try it out.

    Happy FB Sits day!
