31 Days of Joy: Big Joys

William has brought a lot of joy into my life.  God gave us such a good gift when He gave William to us as a son.  William is caring, sensitive, and smart; he is thoughtful and giving.

William has been my little buddy since he was a baby.  When I was too tired to get out of bed, he would just lie there next to me, content to smile, kick his legs, and be with me. When I was able to go out, I always loved having William on my lap while I rode in my wheelchair.  He’s too big to do that now, but he always wants to walk next to me.

William has been sensitive to my needs and limitations ever since he was a toddler.  By the time he was 3 years old he began anticipating my needs and bringing me food before I even realized that I needed it!  He’s my helper and my buddy, and I like him a lot!

A couple of months ago I fainted after church, and I spent the next half hour lying on the floor recovering with my legs propped up.  It is lonely and strange to be lying on the floor in a busy place while the world goes on around you.  When William found me after children’s church let out, he immediately came over and lay down on the floor next to me and wouldn’t leave my side.  He just talked with me and kept me company.  At one point William told me, “You’re the best mommy.” That was really special to me because sometimes it really hurts that I can't do much for my children, but William loves me just as I am.

Later on that evening I told William thank you for lying down on the floor with me and for keeping me company at church.  He said, “Well, if I didn’t then you would have been lying on the floor all by yourself just staring at the ceiling!”  It was the sweetest and funniest comment!  William never considered doing anything but lying down on the floor with me; for him it was just the natural choice.

How blessed I am to have a little boy who loves me, wants to be with me, and takes care of me.  He brings me so much joy!

  1. Rachel- that might just be the sweetest little story I have ever heard.  Bless you and your sweet William.  Give him an extra hug and kiss from his (?) third cousin, Glenda.  What a special blessing he is.  :=)

  4. My girls seem to both have been gifted with an extra abundance of compassion too. This story reminds me of my oldest, Hannah. When she was less than two I had a miscarriage and began a journey that included 5 surgeries and years of severe pelvic pain. She was a great comfort to me many times. I believe God spoke through her to me. I'm sure God speaks through William too.

  5. How wonderful that Hannah was able to be a help and encouragement to you at such a young age and in such a difficult time in your life.
